I've been at sea for three days. It's honestly not that long. Sometimes I'm out for weeks. This time is different though. The air is tense, everyone knows this will be a battle on a scale we've never seen before. And if we can't cut them off at sea then they will ravage our coast and maybe even the capital. We found a reef the other day. In our haste, I fired the main cannon and obliterated the reef before we could confirm it was a demon nest. We're currently racing back home expecting to catch the demons en route.

"Anomaly spotted! The sea is churning?" What does that mean? Our aerial scouts can see far off in the distance but they can only report what they see not what is actually out there.

"Is it the demons? Or a monster?" My helmsman quickly relays my question. I can't really use any magic besides my unique magic so I can't send a message up to our scouts.

"It’s unclear. On the horizon, the sea is churning like millions of fish are swimming at the surface." Could this be the demons? We are expecting their largest assault yet but we've rarely been attacked by demons so we can't say for certain. Still, I won't take any risks.

"Increase our speed. I'm going to ready a shot. Once in range fire. Even if it's only fish we won't lose anything being cautious." My men send out orders and I head to the bow. I get into the firing chamber. It's basically a lead sphere. The church gave us lots of information on how my magic worked and the dwarfs worked to make this massive weapon. The simplest part is where I am. A lead chamber meant to block my magic. The inside is lined with a mix of aluminum and gold with small amounts of what they called godsteel. This causes my magic to bounce around inside the chamber until it reaches a criticality. At which point the shield is dropped letting the accumulated power flow through the barrel. The barrel is made from a complex mix of the same aluminum and gold but with a frame of black steel and a strange crystal. The aiming is controlled by earth mages who raise the platform and swivel the barrel. One-shot takes about half my power. But since learning about prana I recover nearly instantly. I can't fire consecutive attacks but I can join a skirmish immediately after a shot.

The chamber slowly turns white, it reached criticality. The shield drops and the attack is launched. I can't see anything from here but I can feel shockwaves from the steam explosion caused by superheating the water. If those were demons it should only be a few minutes until they are within normal firing range. I don't hear anything.

"Captain, they are in fact demons but they are ignoring us. We are still out of range of normal attacks but the demons aren't heading towards us they are just heading forward.
